One of the game jam games I developed this month was The Last Free Frigate in a Narrowing Sea, a piratical, bet-making, coin-flipping RPG. As the game was partially inspired by Lasers & Feelings, it seemed like an easy transition to create a variant of the game set in a classic sci-fi adventure.

As part of my new year plan, supporters of my Patreon get exclusive access to this sci-fi setting variant, The Last New Frontier in a Harrowing Void, inspired by the likes of Stargate, Star Trek, Star Wars...you know, anything with Star in the name. The mechanics are essentially the same, although we roll a d8 rather than flip coins, but the narrative of the game has been flipped.

Rather than playing a crew of pirates trying to prolong their fading swashbuckling lifestyle, you and your friends play as the crew of an exploratory vessel in a galaxy where most of the infinite mysteries of the void have been solved and archived, and it's up to you to roam the true final frontier and see what you can find. Instead of cannons and cutlasses, we wield phasers and photon torpedoes. Instead of treasure and trickery, we look for anomalies and enigmas.
