The Last Free Frigate, now available
The Last Free Frigate in a Narrowing Sea is now available for download. It's a short game that I developed in a short time frame after coming off a bigger project in A Requiem For Horizon Prophecy Online: The Final Four. As it was written for the Duality TTRPG Jam #2: Land and Sea, my original concept was a kind of Lasers and Feelings-style dice game where you roll more or fewer dice, or possibly look for a higher or lower target number, depending on how far you are from land. All rolls would be based on a shared track of the ship's distance from shore, with sea-based things (like fighting and swimming) being easier at sea than land-based things (like socializing and climbing), an extremely obvious and simple distinction to make for any given action.
But then I hit upon the idea of flipping coins, to emphasize the pirate feeling, and I couldn't easily figure out a system for difficulty — needing more called flips? In a row? Matching with the GM's flip? I'm sure there's a good solution out there, but as I got hooked on the coin thing more than the "distance from sea" thing, I focused on whittling that down to an efficient three-step system and incorporating the Land/Sea theme into the reward system.
The result is a one-page RPG I'm very proud of. I think it packs a lot of flavor and feeling into a short space without feeling too cluttered or cramped. Thanks for checking it out!
